DELPHOS, OHIO
&
MARION TWP, ALLEN COUNTY
The State of Ohio in 1909 required local towns, cities and townships to keep records of
births and deaths. The City of Delphos was appointed not only to keep their records but
also Marion Township. Delphos records had both Van Wert and Allen Counties deaths. About
the year 1927 laws again changed and Health Boards were then given the task of keeping
records. At this time the Delphos books were forwarded to Department of Public Health,
Lima, Ohio. (Allen County)
In an attempt to reconstruct records of Delphos West Side Cemetery, one of the sources
was these death records. Finding that these records contained information helpful to
researchers, we gleamed all records for this period. Earlier deaths are recorded in the
Probate Court, Allen County Court House, and are open to the public.
Information column indicates parents unless otherwise noted. Vol/page column indicates
the volume and page number the Death Certificate appears in the journals of the Department
of Public Health, 219 East Market Street, P.O. 1503, Lima, Ohio 45802. A copy of a
certificate may be obtained by writing to or at the above address. The order must be in
writing and at this time the cost is two dollars.
Ohio Death Certificates may also be requested from Research Services Dept.,
Archives/Library, Ohio Historical Society, 1982 Velma Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43211. You
must request by date groups for dates from Dec 20, 1908 through 1938. The cost is $3.18
for each uncertified copy. Later certificates may be obtained from Ohio Dept. of Health,
Division of Vital Statistics, P.O. Box 15098, Columbus, Ohio 43215. A form AL-235 should
be used to order certificates. I feel it is easier and faster to use the Health Dept. in
Lima.
Note: In Volumes 49, 50 and 51 some Sugar Creek Twp deaths appear. Volume
51 contains only a few names and is the end of Delphos deaths being kept separate.
