St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church
The cornerstone for the above new Church, located at 331 East Second Street, was laid on June 15, 1879 and the building was completed by the fall of 1880. On January 16, 1881, Bishop Gilmour came to Delphos to dedicate the new Church. This beautiful Romanesque style Cathedral-like structure, measures 192 feet in length, with the front width at 88 feet. The height from the floor to the top of the nave is 58 feet. The spire or steeple is 222 feet high and is surmounted by a gilded cross ten feet high. The seating capacity was 1,800. The building cost $60,000 to build. However, without all the donations of labor and material the cost would have surmounted $100,000. In 1998 this present Church was completely restored and beautified and was rededicated on November 22, 1998. This Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
